DR. JOSE JUAN HERNANDEZ LEDEZMA

FERTILITE / LABORATORIES DIRECTOR

BIO

He completed the post-doctoral fellowship program at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. His work included developing an “Embryo Farming” program to provide several hundreds of bovine embryos for basic research. He was the first animal scientist to publish studies on “Sequential Culture Media” for preimplantation bovine embryos. He developed a number of protocols that resulted in a better and more efficient procedure to produce embryos in vitro. He also used biochemical and molecular biology techniques to better understand the physiology of the bovine preimplantation embryo. He also focused on techniques such as RT-PCR, DNA sequencing, and microinjection of embryos.

Dr. Hernandez obtained his Ph.D. degree at Washington State University in the Department of Animal Sciences. He performed extensive research on the cryopreservation of female gametes and embryos, in vitro fertilization, and embryo culture techniques.
He attained his Master of Science degree at the University of Missouri. His research focused on the reproductive hormones in the follicular fluid of ovarian cysts, after treatment with gonadotropin releasing hormone.

In addition to his educational achievements in the United States, Dr. Hernandez earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Veracruz.
Dr. Hernandez has completed thirteen embryology and infertility continuing education programs. Topics included “Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis”, “The Blastocyst”, “Evaluation of the Infertile Couple”, ‘Maximizing Embryo Potential cryopreservation”, and many others.
He belongs to the select group of US embryologists who has been certified as a “High Complexity Laboratory Director” by the American Board of Bioanalysis where he obtained a double diplomat in Human Embryology and Andrology”. This certification is highly selective in addition to the attainment of a Ph.D. degree.
He has written four book chapters in Embryology/Andrology texts, published over 50 research articles in refereed journals, has presented over 100 abstracts in national or international meetings of professional societies and has achieved numerous awards and honors.
Dr. Hernandez is a member of the “Society for the Study of Reproduction”, “European Society of Human Reproduction”, “American Society of Reproductive Medicine”, “ Society for Male Reproduction and Urology”, “The Reproductive Biology Professional Group of the ASRM”, “The Reproductive Laboratory Technology Professional Group of ASRM”, and “The International Embryo Transfer Society”.

Dr. Hernandez has demonstrated his superior clinical skills as his success rates exceed the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technologies national averages for all infertility programs in the United States.

He clearly understands that in vitro fertilization is a complex procedure that requires close coordination between the physician and embryologist. A superior embryology laboratory is critical for success since it is where the eggs are separated, fertilized with specially prepared sperm, and cultured. Delicate procedures, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection, embryo biopsy, and assisted hatching are also performed in the laboratory.

Eggs and embryos are delicate and require controlled environments and expert handling. Many individuals learn the mechanics of growing embryos; however, it takes special skills to perform ART procedures successfully. Patience, manual dexterity, attention to minute details, total commitment and profound knowledge of all biochemical and physiological mechanisms regulating gamete, embryo and reproductive biology are the trademarks of the laboratory staff that works at the Infertility Center of Houston.

The FERTILITE Embryology and Andrology laboratories house state of the art equipment. Our incubators precisely control for numerous environmental factors that can effect embryo development, such as temperature and gasses. We culture most of our embryos to the blastocyst stage (5-6 days) which reduces the multiple pregnancy rates compared to Day-3 transfers without sacrificing pregnancy rates. All of our media is specially prepared by using precise tested protocols.

While we perform the most advanced micromanipulation procedures, we are equipped to perform sperm and embryo cryopreservation as well as assisted hatching, ICSI and blastomere biopsy for pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.

We are very committed to our patients. Infertile couples have their own timetables, which often require working in the laboratory seven days per week. We gladly go an extra mile in this laboratory if it is necessary to ensure that you will have a higher probability of success.

Please call or e-mail Dr. Hernandez if you have any questions about our embryology facilities or procedures.
